The Toyota Land Cruiser is a legend in the history of the automobile, the utility vehicle serving as the gold standard of off-roaders ever since its introduction. To celebrate its legacy, the Toyota Collection will be hosting a special event in its honor called Off-Road Day.
Taking place on May 6, the event will showcase Land Cruisers spanning the entirety of the model’s 7+ generations over 70+ years, and there will even be two guided tours giving a full lesson on its history as well as live demonstrations of the SUV’s differential lock.

The story of the Land Cruiser dates back to 1951. After test drives of the prototype on Mt. Fuji proved it to be extremely capable, demand for the production version was high. It wouldn’t be called the Land Cruiser for another 3 years, though, instead originally going by the Toyota BJ. The generation after that was the J20, though its successor, the J40, proved to be one of the most influential off-road vehicles of all time. So much so, that Toyota decided to rehash it in the form of the FJ Cruiser.
Following the J40 came the J50, J60, and J70, which upped the refinement factor a bit. Then came the J80 and J100, what many people would consider to be the beginning of the modern Land Cruisers. After those, there was the J200, which stuck around for nearly 15 years before we got the J300, the current model.
All these stepping stones in the Land Cruiser’s history will be on display at Off-Road Day, which will take place at the Toyota Collection in Cologne, Germany. In addition to the Land Cruiser, the event will also showcase some of Toyota’s other famous off-roaders such as the Hilux, 4Runner, and the Hummer H1-rivaling Mega Cruiser.
