Volvo has just opened a new design studio in Shanghai, China that will join the existing studios it already has in Gothenburg, Sweden and Camarillo, California.
The automaker notes that the new Design Studio Shanghai mirrors its design headquarters in Sweden and can handle the entire process of taking a vehicle from a concept through to production. It includes capabilities to produce full-size models of a vehicle’s interior and exterior while also incorporating advanced milling machines, 3D printers, and dedicated workshops.
This new studio encompasses 5,500 square meters that includes a 1,000 square meter show hall with the perfect lighting to view new designs. Volvo has also established an outdoor viewing garden at the site. Meanwhile, the interior of the design studio has a clean and bright finish that the company says will help to “ignite just the kind of inspiration that can help push boundaries of how we design cars.”

“Our Shanghai design team is a crucial and integrated part of our global design network,” Volvo head of Global Design Jeremy Offer said. “The new premises and the latest technologies help strengthen the collaboration across our three design studios globally, as we continue to take Volvo Cars’ premium Scandinavian design to the next level.”
Volvo established its Shanghai design team in 2010 and prior to this new site being completed, the team led the design of the Volvo EX90 Excellence. This new model will serve as the flagship version of the all-electric EX90 and was recently unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show. It is also the safest four-seater that Volvo Cars has ever built.
“The Volvo EX90 Excellence is a fantastic example of the fast-growing capabilities and competence of our Shanghai design team,” Volvo head of design for the Asia Pacific region Sophie Li said. “With the aim to bring premium Scandinavian design closer to our customers in Asia Pacific, our team draws inspiration from both Scandinavian nature and Asian art to ensure our products attract and resonate with consumers in these markets.”
