To the surprise of many, Lexus‘ new GX debuted with a radical new design, one that was much boxier and more rugged than its more refined predecessor. That seems to have inspired digital designer Theottle to imagine the muscular SUV as a pickup truck.
The redesign started with the removal of the rear door’s cut lines and handles, followed by the deletion of the fuel door and roof rack. Seeing as this new GX rides on the same TNGA-F platform as the new Toyota Tacoma, the truck was overlaid on top of the GX to get the pickup proportions just right, then the rear end was shifted back slightly to get the proper overhang. Theottle then deleted the cargo area and moved what was once the D-pillar to form a cab. Finally, a tonneau cover was digitally installed to cap off the bed, and the rear doors were added back in to work with the new proportions.

Moving to the rear, the Tacoma was used once again as a proportional reference and the process from before was repeated. The cargo area and roof rack were removed, the wheelbase was extended, then the D-pillar was shifted to form the back of the cab. The most notable change came to the SUV-turned-truck’s taillights, which received a vertical element at each end of the light bar to frame off the tailgate. After adding elements from Tacoma’s rear bumper, the design was finished.
Unlike some other speculative renderings out there, we don’t think there’s even a remote chance that Lexus ends up making a vehicle like this, but if they did, we wouldn’t complain if it looked anything like these renderings.
