Mitsubishi’s famed 4G63 is arguably the most iconic engine ever developed and manufactured by the Japanese car manufacturer, powering icons like the Lancer Evolution. Now, HKS has announced the ultimate upgrade package for this engine for the cool price of 1,683,000 yen or roughly $12,000.
Ordinarily, this four-cylinder displaces 2.0-liters but HKS has increased this to 2.3-liters with the use of a brand new cylinder block with a 0.5 mm larger bore and stroke length growing from 88 mm to 96 mm. The engine also rocks forged pistons with a two-layer molybdenum coat on the skirt and nickel plating. The oil supply holes have been expanded to improve cooling and boost oil volume while HKS has also engineered new rods for the four-cylinder.
The engine’s compression ratio has been boosted from 8.8 to 9.0 and a new harmonic balancer has been fitted. HKS has also installed new rods and a new crankshaft to suit the 2.3-liter configuration.

Those who own a high-powered Mitsubishi model, most likely a Lancer Evolution, will know that there are plenty of tuners and shops out there that offer stroker kits for the 4G63, many of which also increase capacity to 2.3 liters. However, few if any come from a company with a reputation as solid as HKS so it’s little surprise that the kit costs an arm and a leg.
It’s also worth pointing out that HKS is only offering a short block, aka the bottom end of the engine, and not the entire unit. That means customers will have to source the remaining components, including the all-important turbocharger that’s key in bringing this engine to life.
