If you thought it’d be a cold day in hell when Mercedes would follow in the footsteps of Hyundai, you’d better break out the winter jacket as the automaker is apparently teasing a modern-day take on the C111 concept.
The original debuted at the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show, but it appears a recreation is in the works as the company has taken to social media to tease an “icon reloaded,” a “legendary triumph,” and a “reimagined icon.”

The company isn’t saying much about the ‘new’ concept, but they released a slew of teasers showing the rear end will have an oval-like digital display that references the back of the original. We can also see circular, pixelated taillights that recall those found on the classic concept.
There isn’t much else to see, but the new 111 has a sleek shape and an aerodynamic design. However, it will likely eschew a Wankel engine and adopt an electric powertrain.
That remains to be seen, but Mercedes made a series of C111 concepts in the 1960’s and 70’s. These were extremely aerodynamic and one of them hit 200 mph (322 km/h) in 1978.
There’s no word on when the new C111 will be unveiled, but the car will apparently be the latest recreation of a classic concept. Hyundai has been a big proponent of this and they introduced a Pony concept in 2021. The company has also shown a retro-inspired Grandeur concept as well as the N Vision 74 concept, which pays tribute to the Pony Coupe concept that originally debuted at the 1974 Turin Motor Show.
