For the first time in history, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) will sanction a motorsport even in Tokyo, Japan. The metropolis will play host to the all-electric Formula E racing category in 2024, the sport announced today.

The race will take place during the 10th season of the open-wheel racing series, the provisional calendar for which was published today. The Japanese event will run alongside E-Prix in Mexico City, São Paulo, Monaco, and Portland, which will return for its second running next year.

“We are excited to take Formula E to the streets of Tokyo next season,” said Alberto Longo, Formula E’s chief championship officer. “It is an iconic world city providing the perfect backdrop to showcase the unique qualities of our sport and will capture global attention. The Season 10 calendar represents our ongoing mission to create a dynamic schedule of new cities hosting races for the first or second time.”

The Tokyo E-Prix is set to take the series’ drivers around the Tokyo Big Sight convention center, on the waterfront of the city’s bay area. The race has been approved as part of the Zero Emissions Tokyo strategy, which is its climate action plan that aims to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

“I am delighted by the official decision that Tokyo will host a Formula E race in March 2024,” said Yuriko Koike, Tokyo’s governor. “The race will not only add momentum to the spread of zero emission vehicles but will also provide a wonderful opportunity to enhance Tokyo’s international presence by showing the attractions of our city to the world.”

One of 17 races on the provisional calendar in 13 cities around the world, three E-Prix locations remain to be announced. The sport’s CEO, Jeff Dodds, says that Formula E is in advanced talks with more “iconic world cities who are keen to host” races. The full season 10 calendar will be announced later this year.
