The 1990s were an interesting time for sports cars. In some corners of the world, cars made far less power than one might assume and in others, they made far more. Some stunning sports cars ended up being disappointing from behind the wheels and others that looked boring were revelations to pilot. Today, we wonder which five from that decade were the very best.
There are a lot of cars to choose from and we know this won’t be a unanimous decision. Still, we’re interested in how you would outfit a five-car garage if your only mission was to put the very best from the 1990s in it. We’re talking only the finest sports cars of the decade so forget about including stuff that’s not top notch.
Examples of acceptable entries are the Corvette ZR-1, the 964 Porsche 911, the BMW M Coupe, the Mazda MX-5 Miata, and the Lotus Elise.

We won’t make any hard and fast rules here but sports cars specifically will get a little more weight in the voting over supercars. If we were talking supercars this list might be a bit easier as we all know that the McLaren F1 would likely end up on top followed by the Porsche 959, the Ferrari F40 (both of which were introduced in the mid-to-late 1980s but remained in production until the early 1990s) and the Lamborghini Diablo in some order.
If I had to choose my personal favorites it would come down to the following cars in no particular order. The TVR Cerbera, the R33 Nissan Skyline GT-R, the Dodge Viper GTS, the Mercedes-Benz SL73 AMG, and the 993 Porsche 911 Turbo S. That feels like a fabulous mix of varied speed machines to me.
So now, the task is yours. Curate the top five best sports cars from the 1990s. These are the best of the best. Be sure to vote for your favorites as we’ll likely call out the winning combinations in a future article.
