The Pontiac Aztek was absolutely ahead of its time. Of course, it was also wildly ugly for its day. What makes us look back on it somewhat fondly is its undeniable practicality and the fact that it offered crossover capability, decent fuel economy, and more. What’s the modern-day equivalent though?

What’s going to make this particularly more challenging is that we’re not just asking for a newer version of the Aztek. We want something that’s new on sale at dealerships or online today. If that wasn’t the case I think I’d have to go with the Ford Flex since it’s largely unloved but basically a tall wagon full of practicality and power.

Since that’s off the table, let’s take a look at a few examples that could vie for this title. When we asked you what the ugliest cars on sale today were, the BMW 7-Series came in first and it’s not too tough to see why. That face is one that really splits opinion among people.

What’s The ‘Pontiac Aztek’ Of Our Time In 2023?

At the same time, the 7-Series isn’t necessarily groundbreaking in terms of its utility and practicality. Perhaps it’s another BMW that deserves the position as the modern-day Aztek. The BMW XM is unabashedly bold and according to many, hideous. Of course, it pushes the bounds of BMW styling and design forward at the same time.

It’s also fairly practical in terms of having space for lots of people and things. It’s also full of power with some 738 hp (550 kW) available for those willing to pay for it. Maybe we need something more affordable and more practical and more reliable though. Look no further than the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer.

Both are somewhat gangly and proportionally questionable. At the same time, they’re both available with some of the most advanced technology available right now. They’re also spacious, comfortable, and powerful. Are they AS ugly as the Aztek? Not in my view but very little really is. What do you think? What’s the closest thing to a modern-day Pontiac Aztek?
