Pony cars aren’t known for their visibility, but the 2024 Ford Mustang is getting a new feature that promises to keep owners and other road users safe.

We’re talking about Exit Warning, which activates when the vehicle is shifted into park. It then remains active for up to three minutes after the ignition has been turned off.

Using a radar sensor, the system looks for nearby road users approaching from the rear and traveling at least 4 mph (6.4 km/h), which is roughly a third of the speed of your typical cyclist. If the system determines an impact could occur if a door is opened, occupants will be warned by an audible alert as well as visual warnings on the instrument cluster and side mirror.

While the technology is far from new, it’s not something you’d expect to find in a muscle car. However, Ford noted they’re thinking about the safety of all road users.

The 2024 Ford Mustang will arrive at dealerships shortly with a base price of $30,920. The entry-level model has a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder developing 315 hp (235 kW / 319 PS) and 350 lb-ft (474 Nm) of torque when running on premium gasoline.

Customers can also opt for the latest 5.0-liter Coyote V8, which cranks out 480 hp (358 kW / 487 PS) and 415 lb-ft (562 Nm) of torque. That being said, Ford will offer an active-valve performance exhaust which bumps the output to 486 hp (362 kW / 493 PS) and 418 lb-ft (566 Nm).
