The US-spec Buick Regal and AU-spec Holden Commodore siblings went out of production in 2020, with their EU-spec Opel Insignia triplet following the same fate in 2022. However, the model is still available in China, where it got a second facelift to keep it relevant, at least in the styling department.

The 2024 Buick Regal appeared in a set of official photos, ahead of its market launch in the Chinese market which is expected sometime in the coming months. Visual updates are focused on the front end, with a redesigned bumper following Buick’s latest styling language. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder but we don’t think that many people will think of the new version as an improvement.

Buick Regal Lives On In China With A New Face And Massive Grille
The outgoing Chinese-spec Buick Regal (above) compared to the updated model (below).

The boomerang-shaped LED headlights appear to be unchanged from the first facelift, but the model gains a massive grille covering the largest portion of the bumper. The big mouth is flanked by a pair of chrome-infused side inlets, while the nose gets Buick’s new triple-shield emblem. The rest of the bodywork appears to be carried over from its predecessor, including the profile and the rear end with the exception of the revised lettering and branding on the tailgate.

Buick has yet to reveal the interior, but leaked photos in Chinese media suggest that the model will retain the old touchscreen and analog instrument cluster setup, with the updates being limited to the new logo on the steering wheel. This is quite surprising for a model that dates back to 2017 as the first facelift of 2020 didn’t really change much.

Data from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Technology reveal that the updated Buick Regal will be offered with a choice of turbocharged 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter petrol engines, both mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox. Note that the sedan is based on GM’s E2XX platform which is also used by the Buick Envision, Chevrolet Malibu, and Cadillac XT4 / GT4.

We will learn more about the facelifted Chinese-spec Buick Regal in the near future, as a proper launch is expected. ICE-powered rivals in China include the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat.
