The McLaren 750S has officially touched down in North America and to celebrate its local launch, the British carmaker handed over the keys to ex-F1 driver Stefan Johansson to take it on a top speed run.

McLaren elected to launch the new supercar not at an auto show but instead at the Sun Valley Tour de Force held in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area in Idaho. This event brings together a wide array of car enthusiasts who can take their cars on top speed runs along a 3.2-mile stretch of road that gets closed off from the public.

Behind the wheel of a 750S painted in white, Johansson was able to easily push the car through to 204 mph (328 km/h). That’s just 2 mph shy of the car’s claimed top speed but a serious figure on a public highway rather than a perfectly smooth racetrack. McLaren also brought a 720S and a 765LT to the event, both of which also exceeded the 200 mph mark.

“Driving the 750S is a truly inspiring experience,” Johansson said after the event. “It is comfortable, predictable, and yet amazingly fast. You feel secure and confident behind the wheel, while still unleashing outstanding levels of performance. It’s a supercar that builds on the legacy of its benchmark predecessor the 720S in all respects.”

While the 750S isn’t all that different from the 720S that it replaces, it is still an extraordinarily potent supercar. Power comes from a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with 740 hp at 7,500 rpm and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque at 5,500 rpm. This engine is coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and allows it to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 2.8 seconds, 0-124 mph (200 km/h) in 7.2 seconds, and 0-186 mph (300 km/h) in 19.8 seconds.
