A handful of Formula 1 cars driven by Michael Schumacher have been sold over the past couple of years and now, yet another has hit the market. This particular example will be available through a private auction from Sotheby’s Sealed and like every other F1 car driven by Schumacher, this one has quite a fierce reputation.
What you’re looking at is a Ferraro F2001b that was driven in the first three races of the 2002 Formula 1 World Championship prior to being replaced by the F2002. Schumacher drove this very car to victory at the 2002 Australian Grand Prix and just two weeks later, the German legend secured Ferrari’s 150th pole position with the car at the Malaysian Grand Prix.
While Schumacher started from pole position in this race, he made contact with Juan Pablo Montoya at the start and had to make a sudden pit stop to replace his front wing. This dropped him down to 21st place and he had to battle his way through the field before ultimately finishing in 3rd behind Montoya and Ralf Schumacher.
Both the Ferrari F2001 and F2001b shared many similarities to their predecessors, including sharing the same gearbox and internal layout. Powering it is a screaming, 3.0-liter naturally-aspirated V10 engine driving the rear wheels through a seven-speed transmission. This engine was good for approximately 825 hp at 17,300 rpm, a serious figure when you consider that Formula 1 cars of the day weighed just 600 kg (1,322 lbs) or 200 kg (441 lbs) less than current F1 cars.

Sotheby’s Sealed hasn’t publicized an expected sales price for the F1 car but last year, the F2003 that he used to win five race victories, three pole positions, and two podiums sold for $14.8 million. While this car won’t sell for as much as that given it has just one race win under its belt, it could sell for $10 million.
