In news that will surprise absolutely no one, Americans aren’t interested in an overpriced, underperforming electric crossover from Vietnam.
Citing data from Experian, Automotive News is reporting that only 128 VinFast VF 8 crossovers were registered between January and May of this year. That’s not a great start as U.S. deliveries began in March and the company has already imported nearly 3,000 vehicles into North America.

A slow start was to be expected, but VinFast hasn’t been doing themselves any favors as the VF 8 City Edition was slated to cost $55,500 and have a dismal range of 179 miles (288 km). The company dropped the price in January and increased the range to 207 miles (333 km).
That’s better, but not good and initial reviews were brutal. However, the company has continued to make tweaks and the VF 8 City Edition now starts at $46,900. Of course, the crossover doesn’t qualify for federal incentives and this makes the VF 8 an even more questionable value.
While VinFast has a lot of catching up to do, they reportedly managed to snag more new EV registrations than Jaguar, GMC, and Mazda. That’s somewhat surprising, but the Jaguar I-Pace is getting old and the Mazda MX-30 EV only offers 100 miles (161 km) of range.
