The BMW i5 range is set to expand with the impending launch of the all-electric i5 Touring and our spy photographers have snapped it up close once again, this time cruising through the streets on the edge of the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

The design of the new i5, as well as the broader 5-Series range, has ruffled quite a few feathers since its recent launch. Some love the design while others hate it and with the i5 Touring, the line-up will get a slightly more practical version. Camouflage covers the rear half of this particular prototype but we can still get a decent idea of what to expect with the new model.

Visually, the front end will be pretty much identical to the sedan. Visible on this dark blue prototype is a blacked-out faux grille as well as black air curtains on the sides of the front bumper, as well as a large black lower grille area. Unlike the i5 Touring prototype that we saw a few months ago, this one isn’t rocking a particularly sporty set of wheels, nor is it fitted with high-performance brakes and painted calipers.

Black and white camouflage can then be seen across the entire rear half of the car from the B-pillar back. We can see that it sports a pair of roof rails and will likely have taillights identical to those of the sedan.

The inside of the i5 Touring will also be much like the sedan, although the new shape will increase cargo space and valuable headroom for the rear passengers, making it that much more suitable for families or those who need to transport lots of stuff. These images provide us a glimpse of the cabin where we can see the familiar BMW Curved Display of the i5 sedan, as well as the same flat-bottom steering wheel.

BMW will likely sell the i5 Touring in the same guises as the i5 sedan. This will initially consist of an entry-level eDrive 40 with rear-wheel drive and pumping out 335 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque while the more expensive i5 M60 is good for 590 hp and 586 lb-ft (795 Nm) of torque in sedan form.
