The all-electric BYD Atto 3 continues to prove popular in markets around the world and in July, it actually managed to beat out established rivals to be Sweden’s best-selling EV.
Data from the Mobility Sweden automotive association reveals that a total of 721 BYD Atto 3s were sold across the country last month. That placed it ahead of the VW ID.4 and had it not been for the Volvo XC60, the Atto 3 would have been Sweden’s best-selling new car in July for all powertrains.
The BYD Atto 3 is not the nation’s best-selling EV for the first seven months of the year, however. That title is currently held by the Tesla Model Y. The Model Y is Sweden’s best-selling new car overall, regardless of powertrain, currently wearing the crown ahead of a pair of Volvo models.
Given how dramatically BYD’s sales have surged over the past 18 months, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that it topped Sweden’s sales charts last month. In 2022, BYD sold a total of 1.85 million battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, taking Tesla’s title as the biggest producer of electrified vehicles in the world.

A key reason for BYD’s recent success is the sudden spike in demand for EVs in China. In fact, almost 6.1 million passenger EVs have already been sold in China this year and analysts from Bloomberg predict that roughly 14 million EVs could be sold in China in 2026. If that’s to occur then EVs will account for more than half of all new passenger vehicle sales in the country.
The BYD Atto 3 is based on the carmaker’s e-Platform 3.0 and competes in Europe’s C-SUV (compact) segment. European models are equipped with a 60.48 kWh battery pack driving a single electric motor with 201 hp.
