The redesigned Mercedes-AMG E53 is stripping down and showing some skin as spy photographers have snapped the performance variant wearing less disguise than ever before.
Caught in sedan and wagon form, the model follows in the footsteps of the mainstream variant and adopts a Panamericana grille. That isn’t the only change as we can see an aggressive front bumper with pronounced intakes.
The sporty styling continues further back with lightweight wheels that are backed up by a beefy braking system with red calipers. We can also see what appears to be sportier side skirts.
Of course, the most telltale sign is the four-tailpipe exhaust system. It features circular tips, which indicate this is the E53 and not the more extreme E63.

Spy photographers didn’t get a good look inside, but we can expect a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.4-inch infotainment system, and an available 12.3-inch passenger display. The model could also be offered with a selfie and video camera as TikTok and Zoom have found their way into cars.
Mercedes has been tight-lipped about the model, but it has a plug-in hybrid powertrain as we can see both fuel and charging port doors. Little is known about it, but rumors have suggested the E53 will have a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, a small battery pack, and an electric motor that is integrated into the transmission. This setup could deliver a combined output of around 510 hp (380 kW / 517 PS).
Regardless of the final numbers, the E53 should be significantly more powerful than the E450 4MATIC. It has a 3.0-liter inline-six developing 375 hp (280 kW / 380 PS) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. The model also has mild-hybrid technology and an EQ Boost function that can deliver an additional 23 hp (17 kW / 23 PS) and 148 lb-ft (200 Nm).
