Mitsubishi says that it could launch a number of Ralliart-branded versions of the latest Triton pickup truck, including one that could rival the Ford Ranger Raptor.
One of the biggest markets for the new Triton will be Australia where performance versions of the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, and Nissan Navara have proven very popular. While speaking with local media at the unveiling of the new Triton, Mitsubishi chief product specialist Yoshiki Masuda said Ralliart versions of the Triton could include ones with simple cosmetic changes as well as a more powerful version in the same vein as the Ranger Raptor.

“In the pick-up we have a base [standard] model – we have different versions based on the customer. And then [we could have a] sports version, a rally version – a Ralliart maybe? I don’t know,” Masuda-san said. “It’s now in consideration. But when we introduce the Ralliart maybe in the future, we would have some grades. Some people want to have cosmetic [changes] to get an affordable price, but some people [want] a super powerful and sporty model. Maybe we want to set several grades depending on customer preference for different sporty models.”
The relaunch of Mitsubishi’s Ralliart performance arm could breathe new life into the Japanese car manufacturer and given that the Triton is its second-best-selling model Down Under, offering it in Ralliart guises sounds like a recipe for success. Drive notes that while the new Triton will initially be offered solely with a 2.4-liter twin-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel, Mitsubishi has said a V6 could fit in the new pickup but isn’t sure if there is a suitable V6 it could use from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance.
Whereas overseas markets will receive three variants of the same 2.4-liter four-cylinder diesel with 148 hp (110 kW) and 243 lb-ft (330 Nm), 181 hp (135 kW) and 317 lb-ft (430 Nm), and 201 hp (150 kW) and 347 lb-ft (470 Nm), only the latter of the three is heading to Australia. To put that into perspective, the new Ranger Raptor has 292 kW (392 hp) thanks to its 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6.
