Tesla’s decision to introduce a steering “yoke” instead of a traditional wheel in the Model S and X has been a lightning rod for criticism. Now, after quality issues were supposed to have been addressed by the introduction of a new version of the part, more faults have presented themselves.

Setting aside the well-founded complaints about the functionality of a yoke in everyday driving, owners started noticing that the finish of the original, “Version F,” part was quickly peeling away, leading to unsightly gashes and discoloration.

While the issue was largely aesthetic in nature, and did not amount to a safety concern, it was notable in vehicles that frequently sell for more than $100,000 and are competing against premium and luxury models.

Now that Tesla has introduced a new “version H” steering yoke, many owners were doubtless hopeful that the issue would be solved. And although the peeling appears to have been addressed, a new issue dubbed the “Tesla Worm” slithered its way into the cabin.

The problem relates to a curving protrusion in the central portion of the yoke, where the “Tesla” lettering is embossed. The worm appears to always be located in the same spot: running between the L and the A in the brand’s name.

Given the worm’s location, and the apparent consistency of its shape, it has led some to speculate that the deformation is related to the cutaway in the airbag. Whatever is happening beneath the faux leather finish, one owner claimed on Reddit that a Tesla representative said the automaker is aware of the odd shape, but that it will not replace the steering yoke to address it.

While the Tesla Worm doesn’t appear to be a functional issue, it has led to plenty of ridicule among Reddit commentors. Moreover, it’s another sign of the quality control issues that have dogged Tesla for years.
