Indian automotive giant Tata doesn’t plan on offering any hybrid models, focusing on a mix of ICE-powered and fully electric vehicles instead. The carmaker confirmed it will launch no less than 4 electric SUVs by early next year.

The upcoming launches include the facelifted Nexon EV, closely followed by the electric variants of the smaller Punch and the larger Harrier. Finally, the production version of the Tata Curvv Concept from 2022 will also be available in both ICE-powered and fully electric forms, introducing the automaker’s Gen 2 architecture. Earlier this year, Tata previewed another SUV called Sierra EV although this one is expected to arrive in 2025 together with the production version of the Avinya hatchback flagship.

Tata To Skip Hybrids, Confirms 4 EV Launches By Early 2024
The 2022 Tata Curvv Concept has a coupe-SUV stance which is expected to be closely mirrored by the production model.

The news was shared by Tata Motors chairman, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, during the shareholders’ annual meeting. As reported by Autocar India, Chandrasekaran said that the internal combustion engine won’t go away anytime soon but added that they don’t plan on electrifying it: “Currently, we don’t have any plans for hybrids. We are focused on EVs, commercial vehicles, and heavy trucks – we will have hydrogen trucks”.

Tata wants EVs to account for 25% of its Indian sales by 2026, and 50% of its vehicle portfolio by 2030. Still, the high-ranked official believes that ICE will retain a strong presence in India towards the end of the decade, including petrol, diesel, and CNG variants. Note that rival offerings by Suzuki and Toyota including the Grand Vitara and Hyryder twin SUVs are already available in hybrid guise.

Chandrasekaran estimates that the Indian market will grow close to 10 million new car sales per year, hoping that Tata will be able to further increase its market share.
