Owners of non-Tesla electric vehicles can now buy a Tesla-branded home charger as the company unveiled a universal solution priced at $595. The device comes with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug but also has an integrated J1772 adapter covering both worlds.
Following the addition of the “Magic Dock” feature allowing other EVs to plug into the Tesla Superchargers, it was expected that the company would offer a similarly versatile solution for residential use. After all, Tesla already sells Wall Connectors with either a NACS or a J1172 plug so combining them into a single unit was a no-brainer. Predictably, the Universal Wall Connector looks just like the regular Wall Connector, with the only visual difference being the built-in adapter.

With an output of 11.5 kW / 48 amp, the charger adds up to 44 miles (71 km) of range per hour of charging through the 24-foot-long cable. While the specifications are also carried over from the regular Wall Connector – including the Wi-Fi connectivity and over-the-air updates – there is an extra feature thanks to a forthcoming update to the Tesla app. This will allow users to schedule, start, stop, and monitor the charging process from their smartphone, gaining access to the charging history and energy usage of their home charger.
The Tesla Universal Wall Connector can be mounted indoors or outdoors and comes with a four-year warranty for residential use. According to Tesla’s order page, shipping will start in October 2023. The $595 price tag makes the Universal Wall Connector more expensive than the NACS-only unit ($475) and the J1772-only unit ($550).
As a reminder, several rival automakers including Ford, GM, Rivian, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, and Polestar have confirmed they will be switching from the J1772 plug to Tesla’s NACS plug by 2025, solving compatibility issues among EVs in North America.
