Australians have quickly fallen in love with the Ram 1500 and the local range has just grown with the recent introduction of the Big Horn version.
The Ram 1500 Big Horn is based on the DT already available Down Under and features the same 5.7-liter naturally-aspirated HEMI V8 with 291 kW (390 hp) and 556 Nm (410 lb-ft) of torque. This engine is coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission and incorporates eTorque mild-hybrid technology with cylinder deactivation and a Start/Stop function.
Those looking to purchase the 1500 Big Horn will be offered it with either a 5’7” bed or a 6’4” bed with multiple tie-down points and a payload of 900 kg (1,984 lbs). The 1500 Big Horn also thrives in the towing department and can pull up to 4,500 kg (9,920 lbs). Moreover, the pickup features a trailer sway control function and hill-start assist as standard and sits on a set of 18-inch wheels.

While the Big Horn sits towards the base of the local Ram 1500 range, it does bring with it a number of other welcome features. These include bed steps, an 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an electric rear sliding cab window, front and rear ParkSense park assist systems, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel, and an electro-chromatic rear-view mirror. It comes equipped with cloth seats and a 60/40 folding rear bench.
Local prices kick off from AU$119,950 ($76,909) for the 5’7” model plus on-road costs while the 6’4” version starts at AU$120,950 ($77,550).
“We’ve sold nearly 25,000 RAMs since 2015 – across metropolitan, regional and rural areas – with many of them being used as fit-for-purpose vehicles for towing farm machinery, horse floats, caravans, boats and more,” Ram Trucks Australia national manager Jeff Barber said. “The RAM 1500 Big Horn, with its class-leading 4.5-tonnes max braked towing, legendary 5.7-litre V8 HEMI and optional longer tub allows us to broaden our product offering. It’s a true workhorse, perfect for the job site during the week or dirt-biking on the weekend thanks to its ability to transport two bikes or a 6ft ladder without dropping the tailgate.”
