Camper conversions are becoming increasingly popular these days, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles seem to be riding the wave with the Amarok. The automaker brought a pickup-based overland camper at the Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf, showcased alongside the VW California Concept.
The official gallery shows two Amarok campers with similar features. Both are based on the flagship Amarok PanAmericana trim which has generous equipment right from the factory. On top of that, VW added a number of additional components from aftermarket companies, showing the way for adventure seekers who want to upgrade their Amarok.

VW’s Ford Ranger sibling pickup was modified by Schwarzach-based company Genesis Import. The highlight is the Alu-Cab hardtop canopy which converts the bed area into a practical storage compartment with a side cabinet on the side and drawers at the back. Above it, there is a 270-degree awning creating shade around the vehicle, and a rooftop tent that can sleep two adults.
The black Amarok Overlander rides on Delta 4×4 wheels shod in grippy BF Goodrich A/T rubber. On the other hand, the silver pickup comes fitted with the stock 18-inch Amadora alloy wheels shod in Maxxis tires. Both feature beefed-up suspension allowing for increased ground clearance. As a finishing touch, VW added roof-mounted LEDs and two extra headlights on the grille for nighttime driving in the countryside.
Both models are powered by a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel producing 237 hp (177 kW / 241 PS) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque. Power is transmitted to all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic and a selectable 4WD system with a rear differential lock.
The high-spec PanAmericana trim of the VW Amarok starts from €69,009 ($74,472) in Germany, although the aftermarket add-ons mean that the pictured overlanders are pricier than that. For example, the Alu Cab hardtop starts from €3,650 ($3,938), while the Alu Cab LT-50 Lightweight rooftop tent is listed for €2,790 ($3,010).
