Electric vehicles are often maligned for a seeming lack of emotion. They don’t have a distinct engine note or the same mechanical engagements that many internal combustion cars do. Nevertheless, most have enough instant torque to be fun in the right situations. What electric car falls on the other side of the coin though? Which one was the most disappointing to drive in your experience?
We can already hear some of you. “Every EV I’ve driven is disappointing,” and OK, for some die-hard petrolheads, we get it. It’s really tough to give an electric car that same pizzazz that a beautifully running combustion car might have. At the same time, most people just need one quick trip down an empty road to see the benefit of electrification.
Instant torque is no joke and it quickly reminds you of just how slow internal combustion cars can be to react to a stab of the throttle. Despite that, a number of electric vehicles that roll off of the line each year are missing both that shocking acceleration and everything else one might want in an engaging driver’s car.

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV might end up taking the cake here and I speak from experience as one who can say that it costs a whole lot for what it gives you in return. It’s wildly slow, incredibly tiny, kind of ugly, and offers just about 100 miles of total range.
At its best, it can only charge fast enough to go from 10 to 80 percent in about an hour. It’s just so far from the rest of its competition that it’s hard to recommend. Production ceased in 2021 but there are more modern examples that could also play in this space.
The Mazda MX-30 could be a worthy candidate, but this time it’s not because it’s bad to drive. It’s because it’s so impractical in general. This little crossover looks great and starts at just $35,500 but offers only 143 hp (106 kW) and about 100 miles of range. Those figures are wildly disappointing and probably part of why Mazda already canceled it in the USA.
