The Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR is an icon of endurance racing and an immaculate version of its second iteration, the CLK LM, has hit the used car market in the UK. Making this car all the more special is that it has been modified to make it road legal.
A team of engineers at AMG famously brought the CLK GTR to life by purchasing McLaren F1 GTR chassis #11R from private racing team Larbre Competition. They proceeded to overhaul the bodywork and install their own engine and after just 128 days, the car made its competitive debut. It was immediately competitive and ultimately claimed both the constructors’ and drivers’ championships during the 1997 FIA GT Championship.

Mercedes then set its eye on the 24 Hours of Le Mans, modifying the CLK GTR with sleeker bodywork to better suit the track’s long straights. Thus, the Mercedes-Benz CLK LM was born. While it never claimed victory at Le Mans, it did win the 1998 FIA GT Championship.
This particular CLK LM has been listed up for sale through Joe Macari and is one of just four examples produced by Mercedes-Benz. It was used by the car manufacturer as a test vehicle and was sold after the 1998 season. It then spent many years in a private Japanese collection before being purchased by a French collector in 2013 and its current owner in 2017. It has resided in the UK for the past several years and has been registered for road use. It underwent a comprehensive service in April 2021 that saw a new fuel tank fitted, the fuel pumps replaced, the carbon brake discs refaced, the suspension overhauled, and the fire extinguisher system replaced.
The car has been listed for sale through Piston Heads and while no price has been mentioned, we suspect it is in the eight-figure range.
