The third generation of the Renault Kangoo minivan just got a longer 7-seater variant for those who don’t want to compromise on space and practicality. The 2024 Grand Kangoo debuted at the IAA Mobility 2023 in Munich, offering petrol, diesel, and fully electric powertrain options.

Competition in the LCV-based minivan segment has heated up, with rival offerings like the Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot Partner, Opel Combo Life, and Toyota Proace City quadruplets already offering a long-wheelbase option. In that context, Renault expands its lineup with the Grand Kangoo as a more spacious alternative to the standard version.

The company didn’t officially announce the dimensions of the Grand Kangoo. However, judging from the nearly identical Kangoo L2 Van, the model should measure 4,910 mm (193.3 inches) long with a wheelbase of 3,100 mm (122.0 inches). This makes it 424 mm (16.7 inches) longer than the standard Kangoo with 384 mm (15.1 inches) of extra space between the front and rear axles.

Grand Practicality

Benefiting from the longer body with the boxy shape, the Grand Kangoo can accommodate 7 adults with 500 lt (17.7 cubic feet) of cargo space. The 5 rear seats are sliding, folding, retractable, and removable, meaning that the boot can grow to a massive 3,750 lt (132.4 cubic feet) effectively transforming the model into a commercial vehicle. If you fold the front passenger seat, you can fit items with a length of up to 3.11 m (122.4 inches). Additionally, there is 58 lt (2 cubic feet) of in-cabin storage including a sliding drawer and underfloor compartments in the second row.

Renault brags about the class-leading 164 mm (6.5 inches) of knee room in the third row, and the easier access. This is attributed to the longer sliding doors measuring 83 cm (32.7 inches), which is 18 cm (7.1 inches) longer than those in the Kangoo. The tailgate is available in both standard and glazed forms. For childcare professionals, or families who just had quintuplets (5 babies), the Grand Kangoo has 5 seats with Isofix points.

Renault offers three trim levels for the minivan – the entry-level Authentic, the Equilibre, and the family-oriented Techno. As with most of the exterior design (minus the rear doors and the longer wheelbase), the dashboard is carried over from the standard Kangoo. The available accents in brushed dark wood try to hide the LCV origins as with the optional 10-inch digital instrument cluster and the free-standing infotainment display. A total of 14 available ADAS systems give the Grand Kangoo Level 2 autonomous capability.

Powertrain Options

The new Grand Kangoo offers the option between petrol, diesel, and electric. Starting with the Euro 6E-compliant combustion engines, the 1.3-liter petrol produces 128 hp (96 kW / 130 PS) and can be mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed EDC automatic. The 1.5-liter diesel produces 95 hp (71 kW / 96 PS) and is exclusively available with a 6-speed manual.

However, the highlight of the range is the zero-emission Grand Kangoo E-Tech coming with a single electric motor that produces up to 120 hp (90 kW / 122 PS) and 245 Nm (181 lb-ft) of torque. Using the Eco driving mode, power is limited to 75 hp (56 kW / 76 PS), prioritizing range. Speaking of which, the 45 kWh lithium-ion battery is good for a WLTP range of 265 km (165 miles). Using an 80 kW DC charger, the Grand Kangoo can replenish 80 km (50 miles) of range in just 10 minutes of charging. For peace of mind, Renault offers 8 years or 160,000 km of warranty for the battery, which will be replaced for free if its State Of Health (SoH) falls below 70%.

Made In France

The new Grand Kangoo will be produced at the Maubeuge factory in Northern France, alongside the standard Kangoo, the mechanically-related vans from Nissan and Mercedes-Benz, and the upcoming Renault 4. However, the electric motor and chargers of the Kangoo E-Tech will be shipped from the Cleon plant in Normandy.

The order books for the Renault Grand Kangoo will open towards the end of 2023, with the first deliveries expected in early 2024. Pricing has yet to be announced, but it is safe to assume that the Grand Kangoo will be more expensive than the standard Kangoo. Since the debut of the original back in 1997, Renault has sold a total of 4.4 million units of the Kangoo in 50 countries.
