Tesla’s factory in Shanghai, China has only been in operation since 2019 and on September 6, it celebrated building its 2 millionth electric vehicle.
The 2 millionth Tesla to roll off the production line was a red Model Y and some employees at the site gathered together to take some celebratory snaps. Interestingly, it took 33 months for the factory to build its 1 millionth vehicle but just 13 months to go from 1 million vehicles to 2 million vehicles.
This factory has grown so rapidly that it is now Tesla’s largest plant by volume. In addition to building the Model 3 and Model Ys that are sold in China, many of the vehicles are built at the site and exported to overseas markets including Europe, Canada, and Australia. There are no signs that momentum at the plant will slow down either as Tesla continues to enjoy strong sales in China.

In fact, Tesla sold a total of 84,159 vehicles in China last month, data from the China Passenger Car Association has revealed. This represents a 9.3% increase from a year earlier and was in part spurred by recent price cuts made to the Model 3 and Model Y. These cuts, announced in mid-August, saw prices of the Model Y Long Range and Model Y Performance fall by 14,000 yuan ($1,912), representing savings of 4.5% and 3.8% respectively.
The car manufacturer isn’t simply satisfied with growing production and sales in China. Earlier this year, Tesla announced that it will build a new factory in the Mexican state of Nuevo León. We know that this new factory will manufacture the next-generation vehicle platform that Tesla will use for a host of new models and has been strategically located just a 7-hour drive from Gigafactory Texas.
