Volkswagen has been working on a big update for the all-electric, Chattanooga-built ID.4, and for 2024 the bigger battery version will offer up to 81 more horsepower (60 kW/82 PS) than the 2023 model. Not only will the crossover be more powerful, it will also be more efficient, meaning it will offer more range, too.
The automaker hasn’t gone into a great amount of detail about how it improved the ID.4’s powertrain, but the results are nonetheless impressive. Whereas the 82 kWh battery-equipped, single-motor version made 201 hp (150 kW/204 PS) last year, it will make a whopping 282 hp (210 kW/286 PS) for 2024.
That makes the single-motor 2024 ID.4 nearly as powerful as last year’s twin-motor variant. Although the multimotor ID.4 does get an update for 2024, it improves by a little less. Whereas the 2023 model made 295 hp (220 kW/299 PS), it will make 330 hp (246 kW/335 PS) for the 2024 model year.

Despite the increasing power, VW expects the ID.4 to gain more range with the new motors, as a result of their improved efficiency. It has not yet revealed how much farther it expects the model to get on a charge, but in 2023, both the single and twin-motor variants were rated at 255 miles (410 km) of range. The automaker has not announced any similar upgrades for the smaller-battery, 62 kWh version of the ID.4, which is rated at 209 miles (336 km) of range.
In addition to the extra power, buyers who opt for the 82 kWh model will get a larger infotainment screen. Upsized to 12.9-inches, the display comes with backlit sliders, a more intuitive climate control interface, as well as a revised infotainment menu to make it easier to use. The 62 kWh model will continue on with the 12-inch screen.
The 2024 VW ID.4 will be available in three trim levels: Standard/Pro, S, and S Plus. For the new model year, the S trim gets ventilated seats while the S Plus gets a premium Harman/Kardon sound system with nine speakers, a subwoofer, and 16-channel amplifier.
Outside, the Standard AWD model features larger 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels, while the S Plus now gets 21-inch machined alloy wheels. Pricing for the updated vehicle will be available closer to its on-sale date, in early 2024.
