Chip Foose, a master designer of custom cars, has been assigned to create a number of sketches for the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Among them is a modern Ford Mustang racing concept, with the entire creation process highlighted in a YouTube video.
Following his sketches for last year’s SEMA Show, the event organizers sent a briefing note to the automotive designer, asking for new illustrations. The segments they want Chip Foose to cover for this year are overland vehicles, off-road trucks, UTVs, JDM, low-riders, and modern-look racing and performance vehicles, which is the segment that best describes the pictured Mustang concept.

The creative process starts with some loose sketches so the designer can quickly explore and finalize his idea. Once he is happy with it he transfers the lines to a clean sketch using the much-loved Bic pen. The shadows are applied with special markers, with a thin white paintbrush used for the highlights and the shiny bits. Finally, Chip uses an airbrush for the background effects, creating a burn-out fog around the vehicle.
We can see that the designer used a photo of the 2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E 1400 as a reference, although his concept has more traditional retro-inspired looks and is likely envisioned with a combustion engine. The fictional model has a lowered stance with wide fender extensions, a large rear wing, double side intakes, and a heavily bulged bonnet. The grille is inspired by the first-gen Mustang, the headlight graphics are reminiscent of the sixth-gen, while the profile harks back to the fifth-gen pony car with wide shoulders similar to the current seventh-generation model.
Chip said that this is only one of the many sketches he will create for this year’s SEMA Show, and we can’t wait to see what he will come up with for the off-road truck theme. Hopefully, he will upload more of these videos on his YouTube Channel Foose Design, showing young talent how to design the good old way.
