Supercars do more than simply go fast. They can elevate an entire brand in the eyes of both fans and critics and they can leave a lasting mark in the mind. Sometimes, those supercars don’t even have to make it to production to achieve those goals. Today, we’re talking about the most epic supercars to never make it to production.

Our lead image is an excellent example of just that. The Ford GT90 reportedly cost somewhere around $3 million to build and it was never even slated for production. Instead, it was more of a demonstration of what Ford could do when it really put its mind to something. The resulting car featured truly stunning looks and a quad-turbo V12 under the rear decklid to go with them.

It wasn’t the only Ford that deserves space in this question of the day discussion either because the Shelby GR-1 exists. A true spiritual successor to the Shelby Daytona, this low-slung supercar featured many parts from the Ford GT but used a 6.4-liter V10 as motivation.

Chrysler built the ME Four-Twelve which also used a quad-turbo V12. If it got made, the ME Four-Twelve would’ve completely shifted the way people looked at Chrysler. Sadly, it never saw the light of a limited production run. Rumors suggest that it was faster than the Mercedes-McLaren SLR of the same time and Chrysler wasn’t allowed to build it in part due to that.

Then there are the European options, of which there are a great many. The first that comes to my mind is the Lamborghini Miura concept. It should’ve been the way that the house of the raging bull got back into its retro roots. Instead, it claimed it would never do tribute cars – and then years later built the significantly less appealing Countach.

In a similar vein to the Chrysler though has to be the Volkswagen W12 Nardo. No brand in history seems to be as dedicated to showing its fans cool concepts only to never make them though and despite setting numerous track records, the W12 Nardo never made it to production.
