The long-awaited electric vehicle from Xiaomi could be unveiled before the end of this year alongside the brand’s next flagship smartphone.
As one of China’s largest technology conglomerates, it was only logical that Xiaomi would want its slice of the growing EV pie. It announced its plans for an EV two years ago and has designed and developed the vehicle at breakneck speed. Indeed, the first images of the car leaked in January but it wasn’t until last month that Xiaomi actually received government approval to produce it.
The EV is codenamed MS11 but local media is currently reporting on it as the Xiaomi Modena. Car News China understands that trial production of the car started last month at a factory in Beijing. This facility is said to be building roughly 50 prototypes each week and Xiaomi is said to be on schedule to receive approval from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in the coming month or two. Once it has that approval, it will be able to start selling the Modena.

The Modena will rival vehicles like the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal with a local starting pricing in the region of 200,000 yuan ($27,400). Leaked images of the car reveal what looks to be quite a compelling package. Among the most striking areas of the car’s exterior design are the large LED headlights and the relatively simple front bumper. Photos have also shown that Xiaomi’s first EV will include flush door handles, a roof-mounted LiDAR, and a panoramic glass roof just like the Model 3.
Underpinning the latest EV from China will be a 101 kWh ternary battery and an 800-volt electrical architecture. While we don’t know how much power and torque the Modena will have, Car News China suggests it will be able to travel up to 800 km (497 miles) on a single charge.
