Update: We reached out to BMW to clarify the availability of the new 5-Series Touring and electric i5 Touring models beyond Europe, Taiwan, and Japan after their spring 2024 launch. Unfortunately, BMW confirmed that these models will remain exclusive to the following markets:
- The European Union (27 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden)
- The UK
- Norway
- Switzerland
- Japan
- Taiwan
The spokesperson also reiterated that, “At this time there are no plans to bring the BMW i5 eDrive 40 Touring or BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring to the US.” Regarding the next M5 Touring, unsurprisingly, BMW declined to speculate on future products.
BMW has released the first official teaser for the upcoming 5-Series Touring and its electric counterpart, the i5 Touring. This comes shortly after leaked patent drawings gave us a sneak peek at the exterior design. The 5-Series and i5 Touring models will make their debut in spring 2024, but they will be limited to customers in Europe, Japan, and Taiwan. Unfortunately, this means that U.S. buyers won’t have access to the standard models of this premium wagon, though there have been rumors circulating about the possibility of BMW introducing the M5 Touring in North America.
The single shadowy image of the profile shows the silhouette and LED lighting signature of the midsize wagon that has been spotted on numerous occasions by our spy photographers. Predictably, the front section of the bodywork is shared with the sedan, but the rear end has been redesigned, adding the practicality of an upright tail and proposing a low-slung alternative to SUVs.

BMW confirmed that the powertrain lineup of the 5-Series Touring will be shared with the sedan. This means that the CLAR-based model will offer a wide range of petrol, mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric (i5 Touring) options.
At the top end of the food chain in terms of performance and visual attitude will be the M5 Touring which is rumored to produce 790 hp (588 kW / 800 PS) from an XM-sourced plug-in hybrid V8. It will also look the part thanks to a model-specific wider body differentiating it from its standard siblings. Those looking for a powerful family hauler will also have the option of the fully electric i5 M60 xDrive, coming with a more modest but still impressive 593 hp (442 kW / 601 PS).
The market launch of the eighth-generation 5-Series Touring has been confirmed for spring 2024, but you can check out every detail of the base-spec model in the patent drawings below. Unfortunately, if you live outside Europe, Japan, or Taiwan, you won’t have access to the estate, since BMW decided to limit its availability to those markets.
Note that the new BMW 5-Series Sedan has already been launched in South Korea, and will soon arrive in other markets including Germany where the first deliveries are expected on October 21. The executive midsize sedan will make its US road debut on October 28, with other global markets following on November 25.
