According to reports, the first Tesla Cybertruck to ever go to auction just crossed the block for $400,000. The sale was part of the Petersen Museum’s 29th annual gala. The winning bidder might have secured their own Cybertruck but many details about the vehicle are still unknown.
Hosted by automotive legend Jay Leno, the 29th Petersen Gala was a high-end affair with tickets that cost $1,750 just to attend. With that in mind, many thought that this “low VIN” Cybertruck as the museum described it, would go for much more than just $400,000. After all, the GMC Hummer EV truck VIN 001 went for a cool $2.5 million and its SUV variant brought $500,000.
Considering all of the hype surrounding the Cybertruck, a final price of $400,000, as reported by Tesla enthusiast Greggertruck, sounds a bit low. Some important details about the truck in question might be to blame though. For example, Tesla nor the Petersen Museum have defined exactly what VIN number this “low VIN” Cybertruck will be.

On top of that, there’s no public deal between the Petersen Museum and Tesla to ensure that whatever the bidder just won is indeed a “low-VIN.” On top of that, Tesla hasn’t announced exactly when the production version of the Cybertruck will hit the market. With more and more Cybertrucks spotted on public roads recently, it seems that time is soon but if there’s a brand that’s somewhat famous for missing deadlines, it’s Tesla.
At this point, only time will tell exactly when the Cybertruck finally makes it to customers. Tesla CEO Elon Musk famously claimed a base price of under $40,000 originally, he’s since said it’ll have to be more. A figure closer to double that is far more likely at this stage.
