Mazda has revealed its plans for the Japan Mobility Show 2023 in Tokyo, and there’s some exciting news in store. The highlight of their stand will be the MX-5, including the recently refreshed model. But that’s not all – there’s also a new concept model that shares a striking resemblance to last year’s digital-only Mazda Vision Concept.
Starting with the as-of-yet unnamed concept, the dark teaser reveals its LED taillights, illuminated Mazda emblem, and F1-style brake light on the diffuser. Mazda has stated that it was designed to “symbolize the exhibit theme,” making it evident that we’re looking at an MX-5-related vehicle.
Reading between the lines, the model could be either an evolved version or, more likely, a physical realization of the Vision Concept with a fully electric powertrain. While it’s too early to talk about the next-gen MX-5, the concept appears to offer a glimpse into Mazda’s plans for the electrified future of the popular nameplate.

The latest update on the fourth-gen Mazda MX-5, which was recently announced with redesigned LED lighting units, a new infotainment system, additional safety features, and a slight power increase, will also be on display at the show. Alongside the production car, Mazda will feature the MX-5 SeDV, specifically designed for drivers with disabilities, an example of the first-gen MX-5, and a 2/3 scale model of the current model designed for children. Other exhibits will include the motorsport-derived Mazda2 Bio Concept, which runs on next-gen bio-diesel fuel.

Finally, Mazda will also participate in an educational entertainment venue that offers preschool children the opportunity to experience “sand-casting” and “stamping operator” activities within a simulated Mazda factory, giving them a glimpse of how automotive production works.
The Japan Mobility Show 2023 is set to open its doors at Tokyo Big Sight on October 28, with a press day scheduled for October 25 where we’ll get an early look at the event.
