Rivian’s long-promised Max pack battery is finally available for the R1T and R1S. The updated energy source offers up to 410 miles (659 km) of range. To achieve optimal range both the R1T and R1S have some configuration limitations though.
The Max pack is something Rivian has talked about for quite some time. Offering 400 or more miles of all-electric range is a big deal but the pack saw numerous delays until now. Now, as discovered by the folks at the Rivian forums, it’s available but buyers who want it will have to make do with a few very specific concessions. Before we get into that, let’s talk about the maximum available range on both the R1T and the R1S.
The pickup is the only one that can achieve up to 410 miles of range but that’s only with 21-inch wheels. Those who select 22-inch wheels will get up to 380 miles (611 km) of range and that drops to 355 miles (571 km) on Rivian models with the 20-inch wheels. Of course, those with 20-inch wheels also get all-terrain tires, which explains the drop in efficiency.

It’s worth noting that the R1S has an EPA-estimated range of 400 miles (643 km) with the Max pack but the other range estimates based on wheel size are the same as the R1T. On top of all of that, the only way to get the Max pack is to select the Dual-Motor or Performance Dual-Motor version of the R1T or R1S. It’s not available on the Quad-Motor AWD variants.
The Max pack costs $16,000, which quickly skyrockets the price of a base Dual-Motor R1S from $78,000 to $94,000. Those who want the performance version have an even steeper price to pay though. That upgrade costs $5,000 on its own. In total, a Performance Dual-Motor R1T or R1S will cost $21,000 over the price of a base Dual-Motor version before other options.
That price may be well worth it for those who plan to road-trip their R1T or R1S. Few electric vehicles in the market can claim an EPA-estimated range anywhere near the 400-mile mark. Only the Tesla Model S and the Lucid Air can claim that kind of figure right now and not a single SUV or truck on the market is even close.
