It has taken just 14 years from Tesla selling its first car in Europe to it selling its 1 millionth and it isn’t showing any signs of slowing down, nor is its most popular vehicle, the Model Y.

The first Tesla sold on European shores was the first-generation Roadster and while it was based on a Lotus, it proved that EVs could look cool and be fun to drive. Tesla then hit the mainstream with the Model S and the larger Model X before sales took off with the European launches of the Model 3 and Model Y. Of these, it is the Model Y that is proving most popular.

This year could be considered the year of the Tesla Model Y in Europe as it has been the continent’s best-selling new vehicle for six of the nine months through September, outpacing more affordable and traditional alternatives on the market. Recent data published by Auto News reveals that 26,730 Model Ys found new homes across Europe in September, giving it a comfortable lead over the Peugeot 208 of which 21,111 examples were sold, and the Renault Clio with 19,731 units sold.

The Model Y’s popularity is particularly noteworthy when you look at sales data through the first nine months of the year. The Tesla leads the way with 180,721 sales, placing it ahead of the Dacia Sandero with 166,675 sales, the VW T-Roc with 155,972, the Peugeot 208 at 147,091, and the Renault Clio with 141,941 sales.

It will be interesting to see how long Tesla is able to maintain such strong sales of the Model Y. At the moment, it seems as though many Europeans are rushing to buy the Model Y as it is the hot new kid on the block and demand for it could start to slow when new rivals launch.
