The thoroughly updated 2024 Tesla Model 3 not only boasts a more modern appearance compared to its predecessor and a significantly improved driving experience, but customers have also uncovered some welcome new safety features.
Perhaps one of the most significant safety upgrades introduced to the Tesla Model 3 is the new ‘Active Hood.’ This system was recently uncovered in the car’s online owner’s manual and is designed to mitigate head injuries to pedestrians and cyclists during frontal collisions.

It works by using sensors in the front of the vehicle to detect a pedestrian impact and if the car is traveling between 30 km/h (18.6 mph) and 52 km/h (32.3 mph), will raise the rear portion of the hood by approximately 80 mm (3.1 inches). Tesla says this reduces the likelihood of injuries by increasing the space between the hood and the components beneath it.
In the event of the Active Hood being deployed, the central infotainment screen will display an alert and play a chime, informing owners to take their vehicle to the nearest Tesla Service Center or Tesla-approved body shop to have the sensors and actuators serviced.
While this system is new to the Model 3, it is not new to Tesla and has previously been available on the Model S and Model X in select markets. Additionally, an array of other car manufacturers have been selling cars with a similar safety system for many years, including brands like GM, Mercedes, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia, Jaguar, Volvo, and many others.

It remains unclear if the updated Model 3 will also be sold in the United States with this safety feature.
An owner of a new Model 3 in Europe has also noted the presence of metal hooks on the lower part of the doors to help maintain alignment during a crash. Additionally, Tesla has implemented a Driver Drowsiness Warning system that utilizes the in-cabin camera to monitor the driver’s yawning and blinking frequency, capable of issuing warnings on the screen and through an audible alert, Inside EVs reports.
