The prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road is coming to cinemas on May 24, 2024, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, titled Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Warner Bros. has just released the first trailer to the film and as with previous iterations of the iconic franchise, it has been directed by George Miller. Taylor-Joy, best known for her role in The Queen’s Gambit, will play the key figure of a young Furiosa who had been played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road. Joining Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth in the new film are Tom Burke, Nathan Jones, Angus Sampson and Quaden Bayles.

The dystopian film will follow the story of Furiosa who was “snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and into the hands of a Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus.” Muck like Fury Road, as well as the original Mad Max films, the trailer reveals that this new one will have plenty of wild, out-of-this-world vehicles and is bound to be a thrill to watch on the big screen.

Miller now turns the page again with an all-new original, standalone action adventure that will reveal the origins of the powerhouse character from the multiple Oscar-winning global smash “Mad Max: Fury Road,” Warner Bros described in a statement.

Interestingly, The Hollywood Reporter notes that the film focused on Furiosa was conceived before Fury Road was made but delayed due to a legal fight between George Miller and Warner Bros. over profits of Fury Road.

Miller had originally intended for Charlize Theron to retain her role as Furiosa by using CGI techniques to make her look younger but in 2020, said the technology was not yet there to make it look realistic. Theron later admitted it was “a little heartbreaking” she wouldn’t be returning to play Furiosa.
