The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is one of the best-selling plug-in hybrids in America, but that status could go up in smoke as the automaker is recalling thousands of SUVs over a fire risk.
The automaker isn’t saying much at this point, but a review of customer data led to an internal investigation that discovered eight vehicle fires. All of the affected models were parked and turned off, while six were connected to chargers.
That’s obviously alarming, so the automaker is recalling 32,125 Wranglers in the United States, 3,856 in Canada, and an additional 9,249 elsewhere. That’s a total of 45,230 units and the company noted the numbers are simply estimates at this point.

The recall impacts Wrangler 4xe SUVs from the 2021-2024 model years and the company has already developed a remedy that involves a “software flash.” However, the automaker said that “If a certain error code is observed, the battery pack will be replaced.” That’s a big ordeal, but the company estimates only one percent of vehicles have the defect.
The recall comes at a bad time as many owners are presumably traveling for Thanksgiving. However, the automaker said driving shouldn’t be an issue. Instead, owners should “refrain from recharging” and park outside, away from structures and other vehicles.
Despite eight fires, Stellantis isn’t aware of related accidents or injuries. That’s good news and hopefully the trend will continue.
