I know we often joke about how frequently Ford Mustangs crash, but the situation is becoming rather concerning. The most recent group of damaged Mustangs appearing in salvage auction lots across the nation has remarkably low mileage.
For example, consider this black 2024 Mustang GT located in Raleigh, North Carolina, which recently appeared on IAA. With only 16 miles (26 km) on the odometer, it hasn’t even completed its break-in period. As is always the case, the details of what transpired remain undisclosed, but the auction house has indicated that the damage primarily affects the rear and right corner of the car.
In this instance, the fact that the lower portion of the back end has caved in, and the way that the rear seats have shot forward, suggest that this car was rear-ended, rather than being the victim of a driver with a heavy right foot and a love of tire smoke.

Fortunately, the location of the damage means that the front end and, perhaps more importantly, the engine looks like they’re in good condition. In a video on the auction page, it can be heard running just fine.
Likewise, the red Mustang convertible equipped with the EcoBoost engine below appears to have sustained rear-end damage. It, too, has accumulated only a handful of miles on the odometer, according to the IAA listing. Although it’s slightly less pristine, it has covered just 765 miles (1,231 km), which is only a few more than the distance between its current location in Orlando, Florida, and the whereabouts of the aforementioned Mustang in Raleigh.
Although the 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine is considered less desirable than the V8, it still generates a healthy 315 hp (235 kW/319 PS). Thus, it’s quite unfortunate that the owner had only a brief opportunity to enjoy this particular Mustang. Does this indicate that either of these Mustangs is worth salvaging? Let us know in the comments section below.
While I naturally sympathize with the drivers who lost their cherished cars after driving them only a short distance—whether they beefed it or were innocent victims—it’s hard to ignore the fact that these incidents provide further proof that the Ford Mustang is a magnet for damage.
