When you think about classic sport trucks, what comes to mind? Most likely either the Ford F-150 SVT Lightning or the Dodge Ram SRT-10.
Those are two great examples, but they were preceded by the Chevrolet 454 SS which burst onto the scene in 1990. While that was nearly 34 years ago, you can buy a ‘new’ one at Mecum’s Kissimmee auction next month.
Driven just 9 miles (14 km), the truck was originally bought by an owner who wanted it kept in “as-delivered condition.” This means the model has spent more than three decades in climate-controlled storage to ensure it looks brand-new.

While it’s always disappointing to see a vehicle bought by someone who didn’t even drive it, the truck is in remarkable condition and features an Onyx Black exterior with contrasting red accents. They’re joined by 15-inch wheels that are still wearing their original BF Goodrich tires.
Moving into the cabin, there’s a Garnet red interior with bucket seats that are still wrapped in their original coverings. Plastic can also be found on the instrument cluster and interior displays.
The original window sticker is still attached and it says the truck has air conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, and power windows and locks. They’re joined by a cassette player, electronic speed control, and a glove box with cup holders on the inside of the lid.
Under the hood, there’s a 7.4-liter (454 cubic inch) V8 engine producing 230 hp (172 kW / 233 PS) and 385 lb-ft (521 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to a three-speed automatic transmission, which sends power to the rear wheels.
Besides the massive engine, the SS was notable for having cooling upgrades as well as a retuned suspension with Bilstein shocks and a beefier front sway bar. All of this results in what Chevy once called a “one-of-a-kind pickup, on the outside, on the inside, and on the road.”
