Back in 2021, Nissan initiated a recall on the Rogue after discovering a manufacturing error at its brake caliper supplier’s factory that could lead to fluid leakage in certain units. However, in September of this year, the issue resurfaced, and the automaker determined that it, along with two other units, had slipped through the cracks during the initial recall.

The problem stems from a production error that allowed brake calipers to leave the plant without a certain internal bushing. Due to its absence, there is a pathway for fluid to slip out of the brake part, and leak out.

Not only can this result in a sudden and perilous loss of brake pressure, but the leaked fluid can also affect other components, potentially leading to additional problems. Nissan also emphasizes that there is no preceding warning for Rogue customers.

In 2021, the automaker conducted an analysis of production records and identified that 14,054 vehicles might have been equipped with faulty calipers. Nissan proactively contacted these vehicle owners, replaced their rear brake calipers as required, and was confident that it had effectively resolved the issue.

However, in September 2023, while conducting a test drive of a pre-production trial vehicle, Nissan detected a minor brake fluid leak. Subsequently, an investigation into the 2021MY vehicle was initiated, and in collaboration with its supplier, Advics, it was discovered that an internal bushing was absent on the bolt nut shaft.

The similarity of the problem to the earlier recall was suspicious to Nissan, so it reviewed serial numbers from the parts, and found three more units that had not been included in the initial recall. Why they were missed is not clear.

Now, it is recalling the two remaining 2021 Rogues in the field that could potentially be affected by this issue. The owners will be asked to take their vehicle back to the dealership, where a technician will replace both rear brake calipers at no cost to the owner. Nissan plans to start reaching out to the owners on January 10, 2024.
