High-tech thieves are allegedly using trackers on cars to determine whether or not owners are home. Once they’re gone, the group will break in and make off with cash, jewelry, electronics, and even full-sized safes.
According to WDIV and Fox 2 Detroit, the thefts have been taking place in Oakland County and are targeting multi-million dollar mansions. Around 30 to 40 burglaries have occurred since September and they’re believed to involve criminals from Chile.
While Oakland County is approximately 4,310 miles (6,936 km) away from Chile, it’s a lucrative target due to the number of extremely wealthy residents. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard noted the thieves are “very methodical” and have “used things like trackers on cars” and even trail cameras to help determine the routine of victims and when they’re away from home.

They then strike, usually approaching from a wooded area that gives them cover. The group typically enters through a glass door or window, sometimes on the second-floor. While that isn’t too unusual, the group has used jamming equipment that interferes with WiFi as well as alarm sensors. This prevents alarms from going off and notifying neighbors as well as authorities.
After stealing valuables, they’re “frequently shipped to large port cities where a fencer moves them out of the country.” WDIV quotes police as saying the thieves enter the country illegally or through the Visa Waiver Program.
A task force has been established to help catch those responsible and a number of thieves have already been taken into custody. However, it sounds like more are on the loose and residents are encouraged to pay attention to suspicious internet outages and unfamiliar vehicles.
