Hyundai and Kia have joined forces with Samsung Electronics to improve the connectivity between residential and mobility spaces thanks to Samsung’s ‘SmartThings’ IoT (Internet of Things) platform.

Hyundai and Kia’s connected car services will be organically integrated with Samsung’s Internet of Things platform. As a result, drivers will be able to remotely control various in-home appliances through touch and voice commands on their cars’ in-car infotainment systems.

For example, a Hyundai or Kia driver could activate the ‘Home Mode’ while commuting home from work and have their home’s air conditioner turned on, a robot vacuum started, and the lights switched on. The system also works the other way and users could pre-activate their vehicle’s air conditioning from inside their home. Additionally, EV owners will be able to use SmartThings integration to check the energy usage of their home and vehicle and adjust the charging times.

“This is an opportunity to make the connected car’s Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car services more convenient in various fields,” vice president of Hyundai and Kia’s Infotainment Development Center, Haeyoung Kwon said. “We plan to accelerate our technology development to continuously make global Hyundai and Kia customers’ journeys meaningful.”

The two South Korean carmakers will enable the technology through over-the-air and USB-based updates to the infotainment systems of their existing vehicles.

“This collaboration will enable communication from Home-to-Car and integrated home energy management services that are optimized for future lifestyles,” Samsung Electronics vice president Chanwoo Park added. “By connecting the SmartThings platform with vehicles, we’ll be able to significantly enhance the customer experience in both the home and the car.”

It is not yet clear when the new system will be rolled out and in which markets it will initially be available in.
