Ferrari is known for making super fast cars, and more recently SUVs too, but generally we associate the prancing horse with terrestrial pursuits. However, the Italian automaker may soon be expanding into the maritime realm, if a new teaser is anything to go on.

The Italian brand’s Instagram page has been flooded with a bevy of photos depicting churning water, and it has posted a short video showing what appears to be the blade of a hydrofoil. That all suggests that the brand’s logo may soon become a seahorse.

If that turns out to be the case, Ferrari would be anything but the first automaker to attach its name to a yacht. A quick look through our archive reveals that Bentley, Porsche, Lamborghini, and Mercedes-AMG branding (to name just a few examples) have all been applied to boats. Polestar technology has even gone into a hydrofoil.

Nor would this mark Ferrari’s first maritime endeavor. In the ’50s, Enzo Ferrari supplied Achille Castoldi with the 4.5-liter V12 from his racing team’s F1 car. The engine found its way into a boat that set a record of 150.49 mph (242.19 km/h) on Lake Iseo in Italy.

Later, in the ’90s, a limited run of Riva Ferrari 32 speedboats were created by the Italian companies. As Top Gear points out, the two remain official partners to this day, suggesting that Riva may be involved in this project.

Based on the teaser video, the companies may be working on a hydrofoil. This type of vessel uses wings under the water to lift the hull off the surface, significantly reducing hydrodynamic drag.

This would be a perfect time for Ferrari to unveil a new yacht. The automaker has been working to reorganize its branding department so that its logo is applied more carefully, and only to luxurious products.
