LG Display is leaning into the “screenification” of automobiles by announcing plans to introduce the next-generation of displays at CES.
The company is keeping details under wraps, but said we can expect “slidable and foldable OLEDs installed in the back of seats that can be hidden away or extended for use on demand.” The company also released a couple of images, which show a rear seat entertainment system with screens that appear to retract into the ceiling when not in use.
The interior mockup also sports a massive freestanding display, which combines a digital instrument cluster with an infotainment system. We can also see a lower display as well as what appears to be a console-mounted display for rear seat passengers.

While LG was coy on specifics, the company will show an Advanced Thin OLED that “utilizes glass substrates to offer the core strength of automotive OLED at a more competitive price point.” There will also be Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon technology, which allows for larger and higher-resolution LCD displays.
LG won’t be the only company with slidable screens, but the big trend is front passenger displays. A number of new and upcoming models offer them including the Audi Q6 e-tron, Porsche Cayenne, and Ram 1500 Rev.
Given this, it’s not surprising that LG will introduce a “’Switchable Privacy Mode” at CES. It’s designed to prevent driver distraction as the viewing angle of the front passenger screen “automatically adjusts,” so that the driver can’t watch movies or games on the display.
