A lot is riding on the forthcoming battery-electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Not only will it have to compete with a growing number of electric off-roaders but it will also have to prove itself as being as capable as the current combustion-powered version. What’s more, it’ll also have to do the G-Class nameplate proud and live up to the legendary stature of original models from the 1980s and 1990s.

To show that the electric G-Class / EQG is up for this, the carmaker has released a pair of videos that show it embarking on various off-roading adventures alongside an old G280 GE from the 80s and a G300 GE from the 90s.

The first of the two videos shows the new electric G that was previewed by the EQG Concept driving alongside the G280 GE and acting as vehicles used by top secret agents. Their mission is to deliver a briefcase to the top of a mountain and to do so, they must pass through ditches, drive over rocks, and cross narrow tracks. Both vehicles make it to the top and it’s there that the new model receives a special G-Class badge after being approved by the original.

The second clip is less intense and narrated like a nature documentary. Once again, it aims to prove that the electric G is just as capable as an old G300 GE, no matter how treacherous the conditions may be.

While Mercedes-Benz has been teasing and previewing the electric G-Class for quite some time, it is keeping important technical details about it under wraps. What we know is that it will hit the market with a quad-motor powertrain and will probably have more power than the combustion-powered G 63 AMG.

Details including the range also remain a mystery but Carscoops understands an optional extended-range battery will be among the plethora of options available.
