Over 4,000 Hyundai Palisades from the 2024 model year are subject to a new recall due to faulty valve springs that could potentially break. While only one percent of the recall population is likely affected by this issue, the concern is that if the valve springs break, they could potentially create a hole in the engine block. In the U.S., the Palisade is offered exclusively with a 3.8-liter V6 engine producing 291 hp.
Hyundai says it has identified 4,235 models that may potentially have this issue, but each vehicle needs to be individually inspected by a technician to determine whether it is affected or not. There is no clarification provided regarding whether the problem pertains to multiple valve springs within the same engine or if a specific position is to blame. Regardless, Hyundai has assured customers that it will replace the engine sub-assembly free of charge wherever necessary.

The Korean carmaker first heard of the issue back in October of 2023 when a dealer reported a stalling issue caused by a fractured valve spring. By December 11th, a corporate investigation revealed the same problem during an engine teardown. By the end of January 2024, it found eighteen different cases of broken valve springs in 2024 Palisade vehicles.
The root cause of the issue seems to stem from the springs being damaged during the production process. When a valve spring breaks inside the V6 engine, it can cause the engine to stall. In rare instances, there is a possibility that the broken spring could make its way into the combustion chamber and then get punched through the block and out into the world by the piston. Clearly, that’s not optimal for anyone and could cause a crash or even a fire.
It’s worth noting that despite the severity of the issue, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not reported any crashes, injuries, or fatalities attributed to this condition in the US.

That’s how Hyundai finds itself in the position of recalling these SUVs. Dealers and customers will get alerted on the same day, April 13th, 2024. If you own a 2024 Palisade you can search NHTSA.gov with your VIN number to confirm whether or not your vehicle is in the recall population.
The 2024 Kia Telluride, which features the same 3.8-liter V6 drivetrain as the Palisade, has also been subject to an identical recall, as we’ve previously reported.
