Stellantis has announced plans to embrace the North American Charging Standard (NACS) in a move that was largely seen as inevitable.

While the company didn’t mention NACS by name, Stellantis said their North American brands will adopt the proposed SAE J3400 connector starting with “select” 2026 model year vehicles. The automaker didn’t elaborate, but it sounds like the Dodge Charger Daytona will miss out on the fun.

While that remains to be seen, Stellantis announced plans to offer adaptors that will enable vehicles with a Combined Charging System (CCS) port to recharge at stations with NACS connectors. This isn’t ideal, but at least owners won’t be forgotten.

Stellantis To Embrace North American Charging Standard

That being said, Stellantis didn’t announce a collaboration with Tesla. This is interesting to note as most automakers revealed their electric vehicles would gain access to Tesla’s Supercharger network as part of the switch to the new standard.

Stellantis was the last major holdout and the company’s senior vice president of global energy and charging, Ricardo Stamatti, said “Customers win when the industry aligns on open standards. We are happy to announce our backing and adoption of the SAE J3400 connector, a milestone for all customers on the path to open and seamless charging.”

The automaker also used the announcement to promote the Ionna charging network, which is a joint venture between BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, and Stellantis. It aims to establish one of the most accessible and reliable charging networks in North America with at least 30,000 chargers in the United States and Canada.
