A driver in New Jersey is undoubtedly expressing gratitude to the safety engineers at Toyota (and, let’s face it, BMW, of course) after losing control of their Mk5 Supra. The car barrel-rolled countless times through the air before landing on its roof, yet miraculously, the driver somehow walked away from the crash.

Unfortunately, the precise cause of the incident, which was captured by a dashcam of a following vehicle, remains unclear. However, excessive speed (and/or not paying attention to the road) appears to have been a contributing factor.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on February 8, on the Garden State Parkway, as reported by TLS. Remarkably, the outlet says that the driver was well enough to have walked away from the terrifying collision.

From what we can see, the Supra enters the frame in the rightmost lane as three vehicles ahead of it meet to block its path forward. As it drives into the shot, the Supra appears to be traveling much faster than the three vehicles ahead of it, and moves over to the shoulder.

Although the brake lights illuminate briefly, they turn off quickly as the car continues to move rightward, off the paved shoulder and onto a grassy berm. Whether momentum simply carried it off the road, or the driver saw the cones ahead of the vehicle and tried to avoid them, is unclear.

Regardless, the situation quickly gets worse from there. The Supra drives through some shrubs, bounces on the uneven ground, and starts to turn back towards the road. Eventually, the car is facing sideways, and hits a truck parked along the side of the road, sending it barrel-rolling through the air and back onto the highway.

Blessedly, all of the workers associated with the truck appear to have been standing far away from it, and it may have been parked far back to protect them in precisely this scenario. Unfortunately, the Supra lands on its roof, which likely made for an uncomfortable period of time while the driver awaited help.

Once again, this accident serves as a reminder that you should match your speed to the flow of traffic, no matter how capable you believe your car to be. Not only are you putting yourself in great danger when you drive like this, you’re also putting a lot of other people’s lives at risk.
