Ford took off the covers to the facelifted 2025 Explorer at the beginning of February and for the most part, we think it looks quite nice. Sure, it’s not what we’d call sexy or glamorous but it has an imposing presence and some rugged design elements. However, what would the new Explorer look like if Ford took inspiration from the seventh-generation Mustang?
Digital artist Kelsonik has created a pair of renderings that illustrate this, and while the Mustang and Explorer are inherently different vehicles, certain design elements seamlessly complement both models.

The front end of the 2025 Explorer stands out from the new model thanks to headlights lifted straight from the Mustang. These lights are narrower and slightly more aggressive than those fitted as standard to the SUV and give it a much sportier appearance. Additionally, a new grille has also been integrated, as have reshaped air intakes similar to those of the Mustang. Heck, the hood even has air extractors to keep the engine bay nice and cool.
We’re also rather fond of the wheels fitted to the car. These rims have a five-spoke design with black and silver elements and are wrapped in low-profile tires.
In terms of power, the actual 2025 Explorer you can buy at the dealer lot is available with a 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder with 300 hp and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque. Those seeking more power can opt for the ST with its 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 delivering 400 hp and 415 lb-ft (563 Nm) of torque.
Unfortunately, Ford does not sell the Explorer with the 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated Coyote V8 of the Mustang and is unlikely to do so in the future. We’d say there are also zero chances that it will tweak its design to look like the sports car, but it’s nice to dream, right?
